Insurance Rate Increase by State Unfair and Illogical for Local Homeowners

January 6th, 2009

“The discussion by the Insurance Commissioner to increase wind and hail premiums for our mainland counties by 29.8 per cent while reducing other areas in the state is very disturbing.  This decision appears to be an arbitrary increase and clearly not in the best interest of homeowners.  We need assistance with the current rates in this struggling economy.  I am very concerned with the impact that this will have on our local real estate market.” – Susan Lacy, 2008 WRAR President quoted on 12/18/08 in Star-News

Local homeowners and REALTORS® alike should be appalled at this decision by our state government during a time where the economy is in a recession and people are struggling to make ends meet.

The decision to increase rates in Southeastern N.C. seems very discriminatory and illogical while other areas of the state are receiving decreases. It is critical that the voices of local homeowners and REALTORS® be heard in Raleigh and that those decision-makers realize the affects of their decisions for all areas of the state.

That’s why REALTORS® are stepping up to confront the N.C. Insurance department.  The Wilmington Regional Association of REALTORS® is hosting a meeting on Friday, January 9th at the Holiday Inn Sun Spree with the N.C. Insurance department’s legislative counsel, Rose Williams.  This will give REALTORS® in Wilmington the opportunity to voice your concerns as homeowners and theirs for the local real estate market.

Let your voices be heard! Contact your REALTOR® and make sure they attend this meeting to express your opinion directly to the state.  Together we can make a difference.
